Works > Filter Globes

In 2017, I was commissioned by Facebook to create a mural for one of their NYC offices. I conceived a series of diagrams called Filter Globes, inspired by the term “filter bubbles,” coined by Eli Pariser who theorized how social media can create divisions within societies. The Filter Globes are iterations of a two-dimensional graphic of a globe where the longitudinal and latitudinal axes shift between random, equidistant, or null values. Once a globe's basic structure was established, color was then applied algorithmically, making some globes vibrant and lush and others muted and simple. The series is a manipulation of a data visualization, echoing how social media can either promote diversity or monoculture.
